Dresses for Curvy Barbie

I've been chatting with MC about sewing for dolls over the last month or so. I sewed these two dresses for the Curvy Barbie body shape a very long time ago, but I decided that the dresses needed Velcro instead of snaps, and I kept putting off making that change. I finally forced myself to do it, and it did take me quite awhile to get all six of the snaps, over both dresses, off, but now the dresses can be worn and not stay on my "to-do" pile.

I'm sorry to say that I have forgotten where I bought the hook-and-loop closure that I used to close up the backs of these dresses. It is, however, very nicely suited for dolls. The hooks are not as large and grabby as on other kinds that I've used, and the attaching side is very soft, almost leathery in feel. As for size, the strips above were cut in half from a large roll that I have. This stuff goes through the sewing machine beautifully, and cuts easily.

The bodices of the dresses are fully lined, which I find the easiest way to finish a sleeveless dress, and the pattern was created by myself. Even though we're moving into what will probably be the hottest days of the summer here, I think I should start working on autumn clothes for dolls next. I'm trying out some new patterns, and September will be here soon!

  1. Lovely dresses. These dolls have a modest wardrobe. It's great that you can sew. Hugs

    1. Thank you for your comment. I suppose I do dress my dolls modestly compared to current styles, and I am thankful that I am able to sew for them. Hugs.

  2. What a fun coincidence that we both mentioned each other on our most recent posts! Your dresses turned out lovely, they look perfect for a picnic on the park. I don't have the knowlege yet to come up with my own patterns, at least not for something that is fitted to the body. I love the backdrops you're using lately for your photos.
I don't think it's crazy to start working already on fall or winter projects. I work at such a slow pace that I had to start my bikini on February to have it ready for June. I have a few things I want to do this month, and one of them is start working on some winter clothes. Maybe if I start now I will have it ready for December!

    1. It is quite coincidental! I'm glad that you liked the dresses. Since the curvy dolls have a smaller bust-to-waist ratio, it was easier to fit a pattern to them than I thought. I just used a dart above the bustline. Instagram has helped motivate me to up my backdrop styles recently, as well as your posts! :) I used to take more time with my backdrops early on in my blogging, but I just fell out of it.

It is definitely time to start fall and winter projects. I have a bad habit of wanting to finish "one or two more things" in the current season, but then I am behind for the season ahead, when it arrives. Autumn is my favorite time of year, so I want to have some nice things prepared to celebrate it! I hope progress on your doll clothes goes well.

  5. Thank you, Linda! You're absolutely right about making fashion. It's the same with with crafts and home decor; there are pumpkin and autumn things in all the craft stores here. Thanks for the encouragement to get in the right mindset. :)

  6. I like that their dresses match.
You're lucky to have that kind of Velcro! I love that kind for dolls. It doesn't add bulk.

    1. I made them at the same time, so I just did the same thing all around. I forgot that another good thing about that Velcro is that it isn't bulky. Can you not get it down under?

  7. I love these dresses! They look like something I would put on my own "curvy" body. The pleat/gathers are so sweet, and I agree about lining being a great finish for sleeveless tops and dresses. Great job!

  9. I would like one not only for my dolls, but also for myself☺️. I like the gingham pattern in pink it looks more delicate than classic red one.
