My Cinderella Dolls and New Cinderellas at Target

Not only has the new live-action Cinderella movie produced new dolls in the likenesses (more or less) of the actors, Cinderella and Prince Charming dolls were also featured on an endcap at Target recently. I'll show you those pictures, but first I thought this would be a good time to put up pictures of my own Cinderella and Prince Charming dolls.

This may be the first Disney Cinderella doll Mattel ever made. I'm going to guess this dolly is about twenty years old, give or take a few years.

The elastic band holding up the roll on the back of her head broke years ago. The blue ribbon on the back is my addition, to keep her looking somewhat like she is supposed to. It doesn't really look good at all from the back. You might be able to tell that her blue headband, that she came with, is loose. The elastic piece holding that on lost all of its stretch. Her dress opens all the way down in the back. Perhaps that was just to make it easier for dressing and undressing. The Velcro in the back has yellowed.

Cinderella is all about the shoes, so let's check hers out. Basic Barbie pumps, clear with silver sparkles. One version of the Prince Charming doll produced held a red pillow, with a shoe like the one above, attached. I think my younger daughter had that one.

So this is love...
This Prince Charming came out at the same time this version of Cinderella did. Poor Charming's velvety-type uniform attracts dust and lint like crazy. His outfit got a nice cleaning with some sticky tape right before this photo shoot.

Our young lovers are looking rather starry-eyed.
My other Cinderella is about twelve years old. I know this because my daughter also had a version of this doll. It came with a little pink crown-shaped ring sized for a little girl. My daughter wore that ring all the time when she was about preschool aged.

This Cinderella's hair is pretty shellacked into place.
I'm guessing maybe this was a Birthday Cinderella? The stiff, cellophane-appearing bodice lends itself to that idea, as does the tinselly headband, neckband and streamers on her skirt. Those things remind me of Birthday Barbies I've seen. Plus the rainbow-y sparkles. Which do shed. And the ring could be a birthday present from Cinderella.

This Cinderella's shoes are blue pumps, to match her skirt. You can also see a sparkle that fell off her dress.

Now for the latest Cinderella, from Target. There is also a wedding Cinderella with her groom, Prince Charming. I love both of the tiaras the Cinderellas are wearing.

Lastly, there is a new carriage for Cinderella to go to the ball in. I don't like it as well as the one that my daughter had as a child; this one is a lot more open. I would show a picture of my daughter's, but it's in storage with her old toys. The other thing I find strange about this is that there as a stand in the back with a piece to hold the legs for a footman doll to stand, but there is no footman doll produced that I know of. I also don't think the Target dolls look like their animated counterparts, but they do seem like a mix of animated and live action, which was probably what Disney/Mattel was going for.

I imagine we'll see Beauty and the Beast stuff next. Isn't that the next live-action movie? I can't say I'm into these new movies, but new dolls can be interesting.

  1. Open carriage = less material - cheaper-to-produce item? LOL

There was a carriage that had a pumpkin shape that I thought was cute if a little under-sized. This might be it.

I LOVE seeing new dolls, especially with new faces ;-)

    1. I love seeing new dolls and new faces also, D7ana. It's amazing how many different ways they've been able to sculpt Disney princess faces and still have them resemble their animated selves.

I do get the "cost less money" thing, and that makes sense from a business angle, sure. From the point of view of a parent of two girls who were formerly little, I can see several of those thinner plastic pieces getting broken easily. I do have to give them points for the pumpkin appearance at the top of the carriage.

  2. The live-action movies aren't my thing either, but if you like Cinderella I highly recommend checking out one of those new dolls. Their faces are stunning.

    1. I have yet to see them in person. They may have been there when I was at Target, but I was more interested in the animated stuff. :)

  3. Hi there! I had the first Cinderella doll as a child, and the skirt opens all the way in the back because it's reversible! The opposite side is white and is (I'm assuming) supposed to be her wedding gown. :)

    1. Well, I wasn't a child when I got this Cinderella, but I did buy her at TRU when she was brand new. :) I hadn't thought about the skirt being reversible, because I have the Sleeping Beauty doll from the same time period, and her skirt is not only reversible, but she came with an overbodice that changed her entire look from blue to pink and back. OTOH, I don't remember Cinderella's skirt being marketed on the box as being reversible. Maybe Mattel meant to do something with Cinderella's dress similar to what they did with Sleeping Beauty, and then scrapped it.

      Thank you for stopping by!
